In this months Meet the Growers post, we meet the Gehrke family from Campsey Ash Farms.
Since 1999, husband and wife duo, Nathan and Keyestine Gehrke, have proudly grown Australian Broccolini® for Perfection Fresh.
Nathan, sixth generation farmer, explains "Dad & I were one of the first Broccolini® growers in Australia. We started growing it over 20 years ago. Back then we grew one small crop and I picked it all with my Mum and Dad. Now we grow it across many farms in the Lockyer Valley and Mum and Dad have retired. We still are a family farming business run by my wife and I."
The beautiful rich soils of Aussie plains and the mild climate of Lockyer Valley (an hour drive west of Brisbane) makes for optimal growing conditions for Broccolini®. With 300 acres dedicated to Broccolini®, the Gehrkes' and their team of 70 pick and packers are busy 9 months of the year providing Australian greengrocers and supermarkets with over 3 million bunches of Broccolini® each year. Dedicated to life on their beautiful Queensland farm and growing premium Aussie grown produce, the Nathan and Keyestine, along with their three kids continue to increase their production year on year.
Many years of using Broccolini®, Keyestine shared her favourite way to prepare it.
